"I graduated from High School at age 16 in 1930 after which I worked on farms until 1942 when I entered the US Postal Service. I retired in 1977 after 32 years of service. In 1993 I have 5 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. I spent all my life in Franklin County until Oct. 29, 1989 when I moved to the Brethren Retirement Village in Cross Keys, PA, where I still reside. I have been an active member of the church of the Brethren since I was 10 years old, serving as an adult Sunday school teacher for over 40 years, Deacon and on boards. At present on Executive Board at the Faith Community of the Brethren Home. The Lord has blessed me with good health, a wonderful wife, and family. We are enjoying our golden years very much.

NEW OXFORD: B. Frank Heckman, 85, of 307B Lovely Lane Court, New Oxford, died Saturday at The Brethren Home Community. He was the husband of Pearl V. (Brill) Heckman, who died May 1989, and Anne M. (Scheib) Ostrom Heckman.

A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Oct. 10 at The Brethren Home Community Meeting House, 2990 Carlisle Pike, New Oxford. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro, at the convenience of the family. There will be no viewing. The Feiser Funeral Home, Inc., 302 Lincoln Way West, New Oxford, is handling the arrangements.

Mr. Heckman was born Jan. 27, 1914, in St. Thomas Township, Franklin County. He was the son of the late David E. and Fannie C. (Blattenberger) Heckman Diffenderfer.

He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 35 years of service. He was a member of Faith Community of The Brethren Home and taught Sunday School for 30 years at Waynesboro Church of the Brethren.

Mr. Heckman also is survived by a son, Dr. J. Robert Heckman of Elizabethtown; a daughter, Rosalie A. Custer of Shippensville; two stepsons, Jonathan Ostrom of Loganville, Ga., and G. Eric Ostrom of York; three stepdaughters, Carol O. Allen of Valley Forge, Kristina M. Huber of Washington, Ill., and Anne M. Vadino of Whitehouse Station, N.J.; five grandchildren; 14 step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; 10 step-great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, D. LeRoy Heckman of Chambersburg.

Officiating at the service will be the Rev. Betty Malenke.

Pearl Virginia Brill [Parents] was born on 28 Aug 1912 in Mercersburg, Franklin Co., PA. She died on 16 May 1989 in Waynesboro, Franklin Co., PA and was buried in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro, Franklin Co., PA. Pearl married Benjamin Frank Heckman on 9 Feb 1935 in Mercersburg, Franklin Co., PA.

Mrs. Pearl V. Heckman, 76, of 9117 Meadowbrook Drive, wife of B. Frank Heckman, died at 8:20 a.m. Tuesday, May 16, in the emergency room at the Waynesboro Hospital. She had been in failing health since January 1988 and was confined to her home for the past six months. Her death was attributed to a heart attack.

Born Aug 28, 1912, in Mercersburg, she was the daughter of the late J.M. and May (Steiger) Brill. Her early life was lived in Mercersburg and she was a graduate of the Mercersburg High School with the class of 1932.

She had lived in the Waynesboro area since marriage in February 1935, and she and her husband moved to the present residence 27 years ago. She was well known in the Cumberland Valley area for the dried flower arrangements, which she sold throughout the East and to several overseas markets. She was a member of the Waynesboro Church of the Brethren. She had served the church as a deacon for a number of the Sanctuary Choir of the church for 20 years. She was a 50 year member of the Fidelis Class of the church Sunday School.

In addition to her husband she is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Rosalie Custer of Shippenville, a son, Dr. J. Robert Heckman of Elizabethtown; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Helen Blatenberger of Mercersburg.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Waynesboro Church of the Brethren with the Rev. Dr. John L. Huffacker officiating. A private commital service will be held in Green Hill Cemetery.

It is requested that flowers be omitted. Memorial contributions may be made to the Waynesboro Church of the Brethren, 117 S. Church St., Waynesboro, Pa 17268. Arrangements were made by the Grove Funeral Home.
