From the Gettysburg Times of Monday evening, August 3, 1959:
"Buford Mentzer Is Seriously Ill.
LANCASTER, Pennsylvania. Buford Mentzer, 62, of Orrtanna, was reported in serious condition today by Lancaster General Hospital authorities. Mentzer complained Sunday of severe chest pains while riding on a Pennsylvania Railroad train en route to Waynesboro from Atlantic City, New Jersey. He was taken off the train to the hospital. The nature of his ailment was not disclosed. The hospital said this afternoon some improvement was noted in his condition."

From the Hagerstown Morning Herald of Wednesday, August 5, 1959:
"2 Countians On Excursion Hurt By Jolt. At least two persons from Washington County, passengers on the Atlantic City excursion train that stopped suddenly while returning from the resort Saturday night, jolting many from their seats, required hospital treatment.....The passenger removed from the train and taken to the Lancaster, Pennsylvania, hospital was identified as Buford Mentzer, 62, of Orrtanna, Pennsylvania. He complained of severe chest pains. His condition was reported as serious. A railroad spokesman said it was believed Mentzer suffered a heart attack...."

From the Gettysburg Times of Wednesday Evening, August 12, 1959:
"Heart Attack Victim Improves. Buford Mentzer, Sr., 62, Orrtanna Route 1, is reported recovering satisfactorily at Lancaster General Hospital where he was taken after suffering a heart attack on a Pennsylvania Railroad excursion train a week ago. Mentzer, a Landis Tool Company employe, was returning home from Atlantic City and suffered a heart attack after the train became uncoupled and made an emergency stop. Members of his family say he will be confined to the Lancaster Hospital several weeks before being allowed to return home."

MR. DONALD G. VALENTINE, SR., 84, of 575 Buchanan Valley Rd., Orrtanna, PA, died at 4:15 P.M., January 18, 2008 in Village of Laurel Run, Fayetteville, PA.

Born June 6, 1923 in Waynesboro, PA, he was the son of the late M. C. and Elva Mae (Gayman) Valentine. He lived in the Caledonia area since 1945.

He attended Washington Township High School with the class of 1941.

He and his wife, Frances Louise (Mentzer) Valentine, were married on December 26, 1942 in Leitersburg, MD.

Mr. Valentine was employed as a pattern maker by Landis Machine Company for several years before retiring in 1974. He served as a minister at Marsh Creek Church of the Brethren, Gettysburg, for 44 years. Mr. Valentine was a gifted woodworker and enjoyed crafting many items for his family and friends.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters: Elva Nell, Dillsburg, MD, Diana Shank, Orrtanna, Carolyn Priest, Greencastle, PA; a son: Donald G. Valentine, Jr.- Orrtanna; eighteen grandchildren, thirty eight great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter: Patricia Shank; and four brothers: John Valentine, Robert Valentine, H. Denton Valentine and Edward Valentine.

Services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, in Trinity Meeting House, formerly Prices Church of the Brethren, 10610 Wayne Highway, Waynesboro, PA with Ministers Mark Long and John Eberly officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 P.M., Monday in the church and Tuesday for one hour prior to the service.

MRS. FRANCES L. (MENTZER) VALENTINE, 89, a resident of Falling Spring Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Chambersburg, PA and formerly of 575 Buchanan Valley Road, Orrtanna, PA, passed away Monday, September 09, 2013 in the nursing home.

Born December 30, 1923 in Waynesboro, PA, she was the daughter of the late Buford and Florence (McLaughlin) Mentzer.

Mrs. Valentine was a graduate of Washington Township High School with the Class of 1941.

She and her husband, the late Mr. Donald G. Valentine, Sr., were married December 26, 1942 in Leitersburg, MD. Mr. Valentine passed away January 18, 2008.

Mrs. Valentine was a homemaker. She was a member of Chambersburg Dunkard Brethren Church. Mrs. Valentine was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved serving the Lord. She enjoyed the company of others and helping the less fortunate. She also enjoyed cooking, canning and was an accomplished seamstress.

She is survived by four children, Elva Nell, widow of the late Charles Nell, of Dillsburg, PA, Diana Shark of Orrtanna, Carolyn Priest of Greencastle, PA and Donald G. Valentine, Jr. of Orrtanna; 18 great-grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Buford Mentzer, Jr.

Services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, September 11, 2013 in Trinity Fellowship Meeting House, 10610 Wayne Highway, Waynesboro with Mr. Thomas Priest and Mr. John Eberly officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro, with Mr. Ben Shank officiating.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to: Bible Helps, P.O. Box 391, Hanover PA 17331. Arrangements are by Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro.
