Rites are Here for Philip Plattenberger
After nearly 87 years of industry and helpfulness and kindness Philip Lewis Plattenberger fell into the eternal sleep, "a blessed sleep from which none ever wake to weep. His last months were filled with tired hours and his nights with weariness, so that his going home last Saturday morning gave to him a grand release to a new morning in a new realm, where his spirit arrived to the divine dwelling in joy and peace.

He was born in Nazareth, North Hampton County, Pa. He was the second child in a family of five children born to Aaron and Sara Suzanna Plattenberger. When he was fourteen years old the family moved to Iowa and made their home on a farm near Lisbon. On Jan. 16, 1879 he was married to Anna C. Spadt, who passed away in 1919. To this union three children were born. A daughter, Cloey, who died when six months old, a son Elmer, who passed away in 1918, and a son Frank, who passed away in 1927. On June 30, 1920 he was married to Lavanda Warg, but again was left alone when she died in February, 1934. Farming was his industry and he pursued it loyally and faithfully through boyhood and manhood, until the family retired and moved to Lisbon in 1908.

Religion with him was high life. Early he was baptised in the Moravian church and when a young man he joined the United Brethern church in Lisbon to which he was active and faithful and financially helpful. He gave his presence to the various church societies and guiding boards. Late illness caused him to cease regular attendance but he never forgot the church in his thoughts and contributions.
A brother Robert preceded him in death, besides those already mentioned. Surviving is his sister, Mrs. Mary Hahn, with whom he made his home the last nine years. Then there are the youthful ones: grandchildren, Glenn and Roy Plattenberger of Lisbon, Mrs. Nelavene Ellis of Trenton, Mo., and Mrs Opal Clark of Springville. The great grandchildren also live to carry his life in memory. Also a step-daughter survives, Mrs. Amos Zalesky of West Branch. Our friend now sleeps, but his memories go marching on, which he made by life of friendship and thoughtfulness. Would each friend of Mr. Plattenberger place a flower on this occasions, his place of rest would be covered.

This record includes the period of his life, history of hs family, and some deeds of person, between May 21, 1856 and April 3, 1943. Funeral services for Philip Plattenberger held Monday afternoon in the Federated church were in charge of the pastor, Rev. Albert H. Fadenrecht. Mrs. Fred Downing and Miss Hazel Runkle sang. Miss Daisy Burd was organist. Interment was in the Lisbon cemetery. Casket bearers were D. W. Morningstar, C. W. Carbee, W. E. Challis, E. M. Franks, J. H. Miller, T.M. Lee. Relatives from out of town were: Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Plattenberger, James Plattenberger and Bert Plattenberger of Savanna, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Len Hollenbeck, Cedar Rapids, Mr. and Mrs. James Clark, Springville, Mrs. Amos Zalesky, West Branch, Mr. and Mrs. Luther Plattenberger, Mt. Vernon.

She died on 13 Jul 1919 in Lisbon, Linn Co., IA and was buried on 15 Jul 1919 in Lisbon Cemetery, Lisbon, Franklin Twp., Linn Co., IA. Anna married Philip Lewis Plattenberger on 16 Jan 1879 in United Brethren Parsonage, Lisbon, Linn Co., IA.

Anna Caroline (Spadt) Plattenberger moved with her parents from Fairfield Co., Ohio, to Lisbon, Iowa in 1869. She was a member of the United Brethren Church of Lisbon, IA. She died in her home in Lisbon and was buried in Lisbon Cemetery.

MRS. PHILLIP PLATTENBERGER
Anna C. Spadt, daughter of Israel and Elizabeth Spadt, was born in Fairfield Co., Ohio, December 20, 1856 and departed this life at her late home in Lisbon, Iowa, Sunday, July 13, 1919, aged 62 years, 6 months and 13 days.

Her parents moved to Lisbon, Iowa, in the year 1869. She was united in marriage to Philip Plattenberger, January 16th, 1879 at the United Brethren parsonage in Lisbon by Rev. F. D. Adams. One daughter and two sons were born to this union, Cloey who died August 13, 1880, aged 6 months and 27 days. Elmer who died April 1st, 1918, being 36 years of age and Frank who lives near Lisbon. She has four grandchildren as follows: Nelvin and Opal of Springville and Glenn and Roy of Lisbon. She has one brother living, Peter Spadt of Wilbur, Nebraska.

These with her husband and other relatives and friends mourn her departure. Mrs. Plattenburger united with the United Brethren church of Lisbon, soon after her marriage and has been a faithful and consistent member since that time. She was a great lover of the home and was always glad to have her friends visit her.For a period of about twelve years she has been afflicted and during that time she has suffered at times very much, but has always born her suffering with great patience. She would often say "live right and do good to all people and dying will take care of itself." She always inquired concerning those in the community who were sick and suffering and would often remember them with acts of kindness. Her last sickness was of brief duration only lasting one week. Only one week ago last Sunday morning she wanted Philip to go to Sunday school and church saying she could get along, but he knowing she was worse than she had been felt it his duty to stay with her. She always attended church when at all able partly because she felt it her duty to go, but also because she loved to attend the services of God's house. On last Sunday afternoon at 2:15 o'clock, she calmly breathed her last without a struggle: "Servant of God, well done; Thy glorious warfare's past,

The battle's fought the race is run And thou art crowned at last." The funeral was held at the United Brethren church, Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 conducted by the pastor Rev. Chas J. Roberts. Burial in Lisbon cemetery. (Source: Clipping from "Grandmother Emma Frederick's Scrapbook" in possession of Elizabeth Vanderschaaf, emailed to Dale E. Berger on 3 February 2008)

Vernon.

Christian Henry Reiger [Parents] was born on 3 Jan 1862 in Linn Co., IA. He died on 7 Aug 1923 in North of Lisbon, Linn Co., IA and was buried in Aug 1923 in Lisbon Cemetery, Lisbon, Franklin Twp., Linn Co., IA. Christian married Mary Jane Plattenberger on 23 Dec 1885 in Lisbon, Linn Co., IA.

C. H. REIGER'S LIFE ENDS
Mayor Hahn Issues Official Call to People to Cease Labors at 3 o'clock Friday
Christian Henry Reiger, one of the community's most highly esteemed and successful farmers, long a familiar figure mingling with the people and activities of Lisbon, completed life's journey, died Tuesday at his late home a short distance north of town at the comparatively early age of 61 years. He had been in failing health for some time.

Christian Henry Reiger, son of John and Anna Reiger, was born in Linn county, Iowa, January 3, 1862. He was one of seven children, of whom one, Mary, died many years ago. He continued living at home until 1881. December 23, 1885, he was united in marriage with Mary J. Plattenberger. To this union there were born three children, Howard, Arthur, and Willard. Arthur passed away at about three years.

Mr. Reiger followed the occupation of farming, all of his activelife, and achieved a large degree of success. Aside from the duties that devolved upon him, in the pursuit of his chosen calling, he found time to serve his community in various ways, as a member of the township school board for sixteen years, and township trustee for seven years. He was also a director of the Linn Grove Mutual Insurance company for two terms, and was elected for a third. In these and other capacities, he was always found faithful and efficient. He was a useful citizen, and also a Christian man. A remarkable experience attended his conversion. It was during a spell of sickness, and led by the counsel of a devoted Christian mother, and in answer to her prayers, that his decision was made, and which was accompanied by a beautiful and satisfying experience, a convincing evidence to his soul, of his acceptance as a child of God. The impression made upon his mind and heart continued through the years, and only a few weeks ago he recounted the circumstances to his pastor, with a feeling abounding joy. Mr. Rieger lived and died an earnest Christian. He first united with the Evangelical church, but in recent years has been identified with the United Brethren church of Lisbon, in which he proved himself faithful and serviceable.

He was also a member of the Benjamin Franklin lodge, No. 574, A. F. and A. M. of Lisbon, and the Order of the Eastern Star. Mr. Rieger was charitably inclined, of a genial disposition, and always desired to be helpful, and indeed was so, in a multitude of ways, among his neighbors and friends, and who, in turn, sincerely appreciated him for his sterling qualities of character, and his constant readiness to serve. He was like a father to the younger men of his neighborhood, and some were wont to pay him the fine compliment that, because of his ability and disposition to be helpful in every possible way, he "ought never to die." Of course, such a man will be missed, at many turns, in the experience of those who have known him and been associated with him.

The decedent is survived by his wife and two sons, Howard and Willard, and one grandchild, also five brothers, John, Andrew and William of Lisbon; Matthias and Charles of Waubeek; and one sister, Mrs. Will Henderson of Mechanicsville.
Mr. Reiger had been in ill health for some time. He kept growing worse, causing him no little suffering. Death came to his relief Tuesday morning, August 7, (1923) at the age of 61 years, 7 months, 4 days.

The funeral service is being held at the Federated church at Lisbon, this afternoon, at 2 o'clock, in charge of Rev. L. P. Krome, assisted by Rev. Dillavon of Olin, a former pastor of the Lisbon U. B. church, and friend of the deceased. The service at the grave was in charge of the local Masonic lodge."
