Bushkill Centre Boy, 7, Dies Of Polio At Home
Stricken One Day After Attending School Which Is Ordered Closed
A seven-year old Bushkill Township boy died yesterday afternoon at his home of polio, a day after he had attended school

The boy, Henry E. Atherholt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Atherholt, who reside in Bushkill Centre, had complained of not feeling well on Saturday. His condition was not regarded serious enough to call a physician and on Monday he went to the Chestnut school in Clearfield, Bushkill Township, as usual. He was in the second grade.

Yesterday morning, according to Dr. David F. Bachman, Northampton County coroner, the boy's condition became worse and he was kept at home. Later in the day he lapsed into a coma and died in the afternoon. Dr. Raymond G. Benjamin, of Nazareth, was called but the boy was dead when the physician arrived.

Mrs. Mina Hertz, teacher of the one-room school the boy had attended, said today that the school had been ordered closed for the rest of the week by the Bushkill Township School Board. There are 45 pupils in the school.

Dr. Bachman said that when he arrived at the Atherholt home and heard the circumstances that surrounded the boy's death, he concluded that polio was the cause. To make certain, he added, he ordered the body taken to Easton Hospital where Dr. Newton W. Larkum, pathologist, made tests. Dr. Bachman quoted Dr. Larkum as saying that tests showed definitely that the boy died of polio.

The Atherholt child is survived by his parents; a sister, Janice, and a brother, Stanley, both at home; his paternal grandparents, Mrs. and Mrs. Ernest Atherholt, of Nazareth R. D. 2, and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Nevin Werkheiser, of Nazareth.
